Marvell Named a Top 100 Global Innovator for the Sixth Consecutive Year

By Kelvin Vivian, Director of Intellectual Property, Marvell

The term ‘innovation’ is frequently used in business today. For many, the term means providing ideas2017 Top 100 Global Innovator logo out of the blue, which lead to mind blowing discoveries and achievements.

While this might be the perceived outcome of innovation, the reality is that true innovation can arise in a variety of different forms and can have any sizeable impact, and a healthy dose of creativity and idea sharing must be encouraged if businesses are to effectively harness the innovative potential of its employees.

At Marvell, we pride ourselves on working together collaboratively and creatively and this enables employees to be the most innovative versions of themselves, and such is what largely contributes to our sixth consecutive year of inclusion in the Clarivate Analytics Top 100 Global Innovators list.

Placement on the list has become the standard measure for innovation across the world and is recognized as a significant achievement. The award itself is based in part on global reach — we hold more than 9,000 patents worldwide — grant success rates and influence of patented technology, and it serves as a testament to Marvell’s culture of innovation and commitment to providing differentiated, breakthrough technology solutions.

While inclusion on this list provides a celebratory point of reflection for all of us at Marvell, it also is a reminder of the work that lays ahead of us and our colleagues across industry who, while competing, also share a common passion and goal, which simply put – is to make technology that makes life better. And in today’s market especially, it’s more important than ever that we and our partners continue to push the boundaries of innovation at every turn. As the physicist Albert Einstein said, “You can’t solve a problem on the same level that it was created. You have to rise above it to the next level.”

So while we extend our congratulations to colleagues and competitors alike, without whom there would be no yardstick to measure ourselves by and no goal to aim for; we can’t wait to see what new innovations and types of critical and creative thinking this year will bring.

See you all on the other side!

Marvell Named One of Top 100 Global Innovators

By Kelvin Vivian, Director of Intellectual Property, Marvell

Top-100-Innovators

Innovation is the lifeblood of any technology organization. Markets change overnight – if you stand still you fall behind, become irrelevant and soon cease to exist. This is what makes Silicon Valley exciting and scary at the same time.

Products change over time, but one thing Marvell has remained constant with is our commitment to innovation. That’s why we are so honored to be recognized this week as one of the Top 100 Global Innovators by Clarivate Analytics, formerly the Intellectual Property and Science business of Thomson Reuters. This is the fifth year Marvell has made this global “Who’s Who” list of innovators, and that’s thanks to every one of our 5,000 employees who put their ideas, energy and ingenuity to work here every day.

The award is based in part on global reach — we hold more than 9,000 patents worldwide — grant success rates and influence, and it serves as a testament to Marvell’s culture of innovation and commitment to providing differentiated, breakthrough technology solutions.

We do a lot to promote the great products we bring to market, but what doesn’t get said is how much work our engineers do with partners, standards committees, and in end markets to understand where markets are going, and how we can help our customers differentiate their solutions from the competition.

A great example is our pioneering work in automotive Ethernet. This innovation has been five years in the making, but because we understood autonomous driving would become a reality, we were able to work with standards groups and auto suppliers to create a new way to move sensor data throughout a car. As a result, we can provide the interoperability, performance, and scalability mainstream auto manufacturers need to build autonomous cars. Uber and others talk about creating fleets of driverless cars – with Marvell’s technology, it’s now possible.

This is just one of the many innovative ideas born inside Marvell. As you can imagine, there are thousands of others. By giving our employees the freedom to explore, fail and persevere, we generate not only the patents but the products that keep us one step ahead in the market.
